Synagogue (Parchim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue in Parchim was the religious center of the local Jewish community in Parchim in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . A settlement of Jews for Parchim is documented towards the end of the 12th century, before Jewish life in Mecklenburg died out in connection with the Sternberg host-molester trial until the 18th century. Up to this event, the existence of a synagogue can be assumed, but the construction and inauguration of the synagogue was only proven for the year 1823.

The synagogue of the Jewish community in Parchim was in the back yard at Rosenstrasse 43.

On November 9, 1938, during the Reichspogromnacht , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed and the Torah scrolls were publicly burned on Moltkeplatz. The building was not set on fire in order not to endanger the surrounding houses. However, the devastated building was demolished at the expense of the Jewish community.

Today, a memorial plaque on the front building of the backyard reminds of the location of the building.
