The core of the Syngina consists of a rubber membrane, for example a condom or a piece of rubber hose. This rubber membrane is in turn located in a hermetically sealed , i.e. closed, glass bulb or an acrylic glass construction.

The rubber membrane can then be subjected to pressure, for example by means of compressed air or by means of a liquid. The condom or the rubber hose can thus be squeezed as tightly as desired using compressed air. In advance, the tampon is soaked in a certain amount of blood substitute fluid and then a defined pressure is applied in the syngina. The amount of blood substitute fluid that has escaped allows conclusions to be drawn about the absorption capacity and absorbency of the tampon. Based on the evaluations of the Syngina test series, also known as the Syngina protocol, each tampon can then be precisely assigned to the number of droplets that are printed on most tampon packs and the instruction leaflet .

Each droplet symbol stands for a range of 3 grams of blood substitute fluid of the Syngina suction strength. Two-droplet tampons must be able to hold 6 to 9 grams of the blood substitute fluid; this corresponds to the tampon size "mini". Three droplets corresponds to the "normal" tampon size and means 9 to 12 grams of absorption capacity. Four droplets, i.e. 12 to 15 grams, corresponds to "super" and five droplets, ie. H. 15 to 18 grams, corresponds to "super plus". However, the manufacturers are free to continue to use the currently existing size designations and / or the information on the corresponding menstrual strength.

Edana, the association

Edana (European Disposables and Nonwovens Association), the international association of nonwoven producers and therefore mostly all global hygiene product manufacturers, expressly recommends this special test method and has approved and published the exact test procedure using Syngina.
