Synod of Gangra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Synod of Gangra ( Çankırı ) took place around 340/341. Other sources make a point in time between 350 and 360 AD plausible. The reason for the meeting was the ascetic-heretical movement around Eustathius of Sebaste , the so-called Eustathians .

The synod condemned their doctrine and practices. In particular, the rejection of marriage, the failure to observe church holidays and fasting on Sundays, as well as inciting slaves against their masters were condemned. The fact that the Eustathians held their own worship services and stayed away from the church services was also criticized. For the Eustathian movement it is important that the documents of the synod do not indicate a fundamental rejection of property, and, according to Eustathian doctrine, those in possession do not seem to have been fundamentally excluded from eternal salvation.
