SyriaTel ( Arabic سيريتل) is a privately owned Syrian mobile operator founded in 2000 and, alongside MTN, one of only two mobile communications companies that have a license in Syria. The Syrian Ministry of Communication and Technology is currently conducting a tender for a third provider.

SyriaTel controls - according to its own statements - 55 percent market share (6 million customers) in the Syrian mobile communications market, the largest number of subscribers in the country.

The main owner of SyriaTel is the controversial Syrian businessman Rami Machluf , against whom allegations of corruption have been repeatedly raised. Together with the Lebanese businessman Pierre Fattouch, Machluf is said to have operated an illegal telephone network before 2006 that diverted calls in Lebanon via the SyriaTel network.

SyriaTel is cited by Salwa Ismail from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London as an ideal example of Syria's problems on the way to a market economy . When the company was founded, the Syrian Ministry of Economic Affairs did not undertake any financial or corporate structure reviews, despite numerous concerns. The establishment as a " Build Operate Transfer " was criticized because it stipulates that the company will be returned to state ownership after a 15-year build-up phase. SyriaTel is still registered as a pure telecommunications company, although other, potentially loss-making business areas are also operated. When the company went public in 2004, it was criticized that buyers were left with the assumption that they would invest exclusively in mobile communications, even though this was not true.

In its external presentation, the company particularly emphasizes its social responsibility. In 2011 SyriaTel stated "efficiency, innovation, respect, integrity, customer focus, teamwork and winning" as corporate values, while since 2012 "team spirit, excellence, customer orientation, integrity, respect, ownership responsibility and passion" have been given as the guiding principles of corporate action.

On May 9, 2011, the European Union issued far-reaching sanctions against the President of SyriaTel, Rami Machluf, and on May 23, 2011 also against Vice-President Ihab Machluf, which in addition to a ban on entry into the EU also include the blocking of funds and financial deposits.
