Syslog-ng is a further development of Syslog with the aim of eliminating known vulnerabilities.

Syslog-ng offers uniform logging functions on a variety of platforms. This is important because the syslog programs included as standard in the operating system differ from one another in essential details, which makes it difficult to set up a homogeneous logging system. This problem can be solved by installing syslog-ng on all participating computers. This property is a great incentive for the use and distribution of the program.

Syslog-ng is used as a reference by many other syslog implementations because of its widespread use.

An alternative to syslog-ng is rsyslog or the daemon journald contained in systemd .
