System management facility

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

System Management Facility (short: SMF ) is a computer program that collects and stores system and process-related information from the z / OS operating system. In addition to the independent collection of data, SMF provides a generally applicable data format that allows other applications under z / OS to collect data and save it via SMF. The SMF data format consists of general header information and information blocks that can be accessed by so-called triplets in programs. Each triplet consists of three pieces of information:

  • A 32-bit field that contains the offset of the section starting from the head of the SMF record.
  • A 16-bit field containing the length of the section.
  • A 16-bit field that contains the number of similar sections.

SMF is the general format for performance-related data on z / OS. There are more than 100 SMF record types in use by IBM products on z / OS today. Many components have a reserved number range for SMF data records. For example, RMF uses the 70s range of numbers.
