The system for automated geoscientific analyzes (abbreviated SAGA GIS , often also SAGA ) is an open source geographic information system . The SAGA project is mainly developed in the Geography Department of the University of Hamburg . The main developers are Olaf Conrad and Volker Wichmann.

SAGA GIS has a wide range of functions. SAGA GIS was originally created from a large number of small, specialized programs for various geoscientific issues that were combined in one program. The focus of the program is on physical-geographic calculations and forms of representation, which are usually carried out on the basis of raster data.

In addition, SAGA GIS can also load, change and create vector data and is therefore also suitable for dealing with thematic maps. SAGA GIS masters the presentation of pie and bar charts .

SAGA GIS installation packages are provided for Linux and Windows. The source code can be downloaded from the project's website. The program can be used across platforms. It is possible to run the program from a portable USB storage device .
