Systematics of the Duisburg City Library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The systematics of the Duisburg City Library (SSD) is a classification for public libraries .

It was first published in 1966 and is constantly updated. The last edition appeared in 2001. The SSD was developed in response to the general interest in the subject areas for public libraries.

construction

The SSD is divided into 23 main groups (from A – Z, with the exception of the letters I, J and Q), each of which is subdivided hierarchically. The notations always begin with the capital letter of the main group and can consist of up to three letters in the further subdivision. Numbers are used from the fourth hierarchical level. Here is an example:

Main group C Geography
Subgroup CE Europe
Subgroup CEL Western Europe
Subgroup CEL 2 France
Subgroup CEL 20 Northern France
Subgroup CEL 200 Paris; Ile de France

particularities

The SSD contains an ordered index of subject terms that lists the notations for each subject heading . This simplifies the systematization.

The SSD is an extension of the ASB ( General Systematics for Public Libraries ) by making it more subdivided, which makes research easier.

Today the SSD is used by more than 80 libraries in Germany and Austria.
