The company founder József Törley (1858–1907) acquired knowledge of the methods of champagne production in the area around Reims and in 1882 opened his own sparkling wine cellar. The village of Budafok was suitable for this , as the cellars could be built here in the limestone, which ensured a constant temperature for the production of sparkling wine. Törley ran the company with Louis François, who worked as a cellar master. In 1890 the steadily growing company moved from Peter-und-Paul-Straße 578 to Anna-Straße, where 20,000 square meters of basement were available.

József Törley turned out to be not only an excellent businessman, but also a winemaker. He continuously developed his winery and production technology. He introduced refrigerative disgorging in Hungary.

At the turn of the 20th century, his facility was the most modern sparkling wine cellar in Hungary. “Törley” became the epitome of Hungarian sparkling wine, which competed with the Pest brand “Operette”. Törley was consumed in upscale hotels, cafes, restaurants, dance halls and bars. The sparkling Törley sparkling wine was enjoyed by the up-and-coming bourgeoisie and the nobility at high festivities and was considered a status symbol. At that time, artistically richly decorated product catalogs and invoices as well as postcards were created .

The company successfully presented its products at the 1885 exhibition in Budapest. Under the exhibition motto "Wine and other alcoholic beverages", Törley presented itself in its own pavilion as a company that manufactured its products using the tried and tested French method.

Famous brands were the "Talisman", which was also advertised in 1885, and the sparkling wine "Casino". At that time, Törley produced around 150,000 bottles a year, which were exported not only to Europe, but also to Asia and America. Initially five, later twenty employees worked in the winery. At the world exhibition in 1885 Törley was awarded the gold medal, also in 1893 at the national exhibition.

In 1896 60 workers were already working here, and a 20 hp steam engine was used for production. For his services, Törley was ennobled by King Franz Joseph I on April 1, 1896 .

In 1907 the winery celebrated its 25th anniversary. Törley was known as far as America and Australia. There were branches in Hamburg , Berlin and Copenhagen. Törley sparkling wine became a popular drink even in Paris. By 1910 the winery was producing 2 million bottles. Despite all the turmoil, the company was able to survive the First World War and the collapse of the dual monarchy.

However, the sparkling wine cellar suffered severe damage and destruction during the Second World War . The main building, decorated with the artistically unique tiles of the Zsolnay porcelain factory , was badly damaged, even during the Soviet occupation. Immediately after the war there were only four employees left, and the sparkling wine cellar was in a desolate state.

After the war, Törley was nationalized by the communists in 1948/1950. Over time, it was able to consolidate and expand its position again. 1989–90 the sparkling wine cellar was privatized again. Due to complicated restitution laws, the company and the name of the German Henkell & Söhnlein group. Törley Sektkellerei Kft. Is the Hungarian market leader for sparkling wine and wine. 12-14 million bottles are produced every year.

The museum in Budafok shows objects and artifacts from bygone times over several eras.
