A door holder is a device with which a door can be fixed in any wide open position. A bolt with a rubber block on its tip will i. d. Usually pressed with the foot against the floor, where it is held by a clamping device. The elastically deformed rubber block holds the normal force required for frictional connection with the ground. When pressing down, a metallic spring is usually also tensioned, with the help of which the bolt can return to the upper position. A slim wedge pushed under the door leaf also acts as a door holder.

Fully open doors can be held on the wall with a chain or hook . Foot-operated hooks mounted on the floor are also used to hold on.

Fire doors are held open against the action of a door closer using electromagnetic hold- open devices that can be released remotely .
