The Tōkō-in ( Japanese 東 光 院 ) with the mountain name Butsunichi-san ( 仏 日 山 ), also called Hagi no tera ( 萩 の 寺 ), is a temple of the Sōtō direction of Buddhism in Toyonaka ( Osaka Prefecture ). It is the 12th temple on the New Saigoku Pilgrimage Route .

history

Plan of the temple (see text)

The temple, which is said to have been founded by Priest Gyōki in 735, originally stood in the Kitaku (北区) district of Osaka . It was moved to this location in 1914.

Every year from September 15th to 25th the " Bush Clover Festival" ( 萩 ま つ り Hagi-Matsuri ) takes place. One of the temple's bush clover lovers was Masaoka Shiki , of whom a memorial stele stands on the temple grounds.

investment

You enter the complex in the southwest through the simple temple gate ( 山門 Sanmon ; in plan 1), go ahead past the bush clover garden, turn right to get to the main hall ( 本 堂 Hondō ; 2) in the northeast. The cemetery (F) adjoins the main hall.

Temple treasures

The main cult figure is an eleven-headed Kannon ( 十 一面 観 音 立 像 Jūichimen Kannon ritsuzō ). When they were taken apart in 1985, a paper bag was found inside, wrapped in paper strips and decorated with lacquer and gold dust in such a way that it creates a Buddha image.

A wooden Buddha statue ( 木造 釈 迦 如 来 坐像 Mokuzō Shaka Nyorai zazō ) is also kept in the main hall . It is only 7.3 cm tall and is carved from one piece of wood with its lotus position. It is believed that an aureole ( 光 背 Kōhai ) actually belonged to it. From the shape of the robe and the position of the hand one concludes that it is a form of incarnation of Buddha ( 化 仏 Kebutsu ). The figure, which is dated to the late Heian period , is registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan .
