Tōki Sengi Kyōikutai

The Tōki Sengi Kyōikutai ( Japanese 冬季 戦 技 教育 隊 , dt. About "Winter Combat Training Unit ", Tōsenkyō for short ( 冬 戦 教 ), English Cold Weather Combat Training Unit , short CWCT ) is a unit of the Japanese ground self-defense forces based in the Makomanai base in Sapporo , Hokkaidō . It is the only unit of the self-defense forces specially trained for combat under winter conditions and is directly subordinate to the "Northern Army" ( hokubu hōmentai ).

The Tōsenkyō consists of three departments:

  • The Tōsen-sengi kyōiku-shitsu ( 戦 闘 戦 技 教育 室 , about "winter combat training department"), which trains soldiers for use in winter conditions and in the mountains,
  • the Chōsa-kenkyū-shitsu ( 調査 研究室 , "Research and Investigation Department") and
  • the Tokubetsu taiiku katei kyōiku-shitsu ( 特別 体育 課程 教育 室 , about "Special Department for Sports Education "), which consists of sports soldiers from the disciplines of biathlon and cross-country skiing . In biathlon, the Tōsenkyō soldiers form the core of the Japanese national team.

The forerunner of Tōsenkyō was the 1961 founded Hokubu-hōmen tokubetsu sengi kunren-tai ( 北部 方面 特別 戦 技 訓練 隊 , about "northern special training unit"), 1980 the current organizational structure was established. Women have also been trained since 1990.
