The Tōritenjō-ji ( Japanese 忉 利 天上 寺 ) is a temple of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in the mountains of Kobe ( Hyōgo prefecture ). It is the 22nd temple on the New Saigoku Pilgrimage Route .

history

Plan of the temple (see text)

According to temple tradition, the high-ranking Indian priest Hōdō Sennin ( 法 道 仙人 ) laid the temple in 646. Later, after his return from China during the Tang period , Priest Kūkai set up the portrait of the Maya, the mother of Buddha , made by Emperor Liang Wu Di , which he brought with him from there. Since the mountain resembles Mount Toriten in India, this mountain name was adopted.

In 1976 the temple was destroyed by fire. The temple was then rebuilt about 700 meters north.
