The TAI Hürkuş ("free bird") is a training and ground attack aircraft from the Turkish manufacturer TUSAŞ Aerospace Industries (TAI). It is a further development of the South Korean KAI KT-1 .
history
The aircraft is named after Vecihi Hürkuş, a Turkish aviation pioneer and the first Turkish aircraft manufacturer. The single-engine turboprop aircraft has been developed as a training and ground attack aircraft for the Turkish Air Force and the Army since 2006 .
construction
The Hürkuş is a single-engine low -wing aircraft that is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68T turboprop engine with 1200 kW. The pilots sit one behind the other in a tandem configuration. The machine has a retractable undercarriage and can carry additional tanks or various weapons at four suspension points under the wings. The aircraft is equipped with two Martin-Baker Mk T-16 N 0/0 ejection seats and designed for day and night operations.
Versions
- Hürkuş-A - The basic version is certified for the civil market.
- Hürkuş-B - The extended version is equipped with military avionics (including HUD , MFDs and mission computers ). The cockpit design is similar to that of the F-16 or F-35 in order to facilitate retraining.
- Hürkuş-C - An armed version as an air support aircraft for ground forces. In this function, the aircraft can take up a weapon load of up to 1500 kg at four suspension points under the wings and should also receive Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR). The Hürkuş is said to be able to operate from unprepared runways, so the Turkish army is showing an interest in supporting their attack helicopters.
- In addition, TAI is planning a version for the Turkish coast guard , which should be equipped for sea reconnaissance and maritime surveillance.
