Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility
The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility ( TJNAF ), also known colloquially as the Jefferson Lab or JLab , is a research center for particle physics of the US Department of Energy in Newport News .
history
The TJNAF was founded in 1984. Until 1996, the name of the research center was Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility ( CEBAF ). In 2009 the research center employed over 675 people and over 2000 scientists.
Since 2004 there have been plans to expand the accelerator to a maximum electron energy of 12 GeV . Construction began on September 15, 2008.
The CEBAF delivered a continuous electron beam especially for nuclear physics research.
construction
The central device of the TJNAF is a linear accelerator for electrons , more precisely a recirculating linac in which the electron beam is sent several times through the two linacs. He uses superconducting cavity resonators. The maximum electron energy is 6 GeV, an upgrade to 12 GeV is under construction (2010). A free-electron laser is connected .
