TMK ( Russian Тяжелый Межпланетный Корабль : Tjaschelyi Meschplanetnyi Korabl = heavy interplanetary vehicle) was the name of a Soviet project for a manned Venus and Mars flyby. The TMK spacecraft should have started in 1971 and completed a three-year round trip with a Mars flyby, during which measuring probes should have been dropped on Mars . The TMK project, which would have represented a Soviet response to the manned moon landings during the space race , could not be implemented because the required launch rocket, the N1 , did not work.
