Tabo is a village and monastery in the Spiti Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northwestern India .

The center and main attraction of Tabo is the old monastery surrounded by thick walls. It was founded in the year 996 and preserves well-preserved paintings in several above-ground “temple caves”. The works of art in the main temple date from the 10th and 11th centuries. A modern assembly hall, a magnificent stupa and a hotel have recently been built in the vicinity of the old monastery.
