Tabor Tower
The Tabor Tower on the Tabor hill in Steyr has existed since around 1480. It used to be part of the city fortifications and the watchtower of the fire station.
history
The word "Tabor" is borrowed from Czech and means camp, fortification, castle . It is a recent loan from the post-Hussite period.
Since there were constant fire disasters in the city due to open fire and light, a permanent fire station with two fire guards was set up in the fortification tower. The biggest fire in 1727 spread from a dye works in the Ennsdorf district to the old town and the Styraburg ( Lamberg Castle ) and caused great damage.
The building, already desolate at the end of the 1950s, was renovated and rebuilt from 1958 onwards. At that time, instead of the old bulky ridge turret, the Tabor tower was given today's turret, which is positioned in front of the facade like a bay window. Since its completion in 1959, the building has housed a restaurant (with interruptions).
Surroundings
In the immediate vicinity are the urn cemetery on Tabor with crematorium (opened in 1927) and the Taborstiege to Schlüsselhofgasse. The nearby Watchtower Street is named after the former watch house. It connects the Anzengruberstraße with the Bogenhausstraße.
