The blackboard compass is a compass with legs made of wood, metal or plastic used to create circular arcs on blackboards .

One leg - usually provided with a metal tip or suction cups to hold it in place - is locked, while the other - provided with a sleeve to hold the chalk - can slide on an arc, which is made possible by locking the screw .
