Elderly Generation Day

The International Day of Older Persons is intended to make an international day of action, the people on the situation and the needs of the older generation attentive.

Situation in Germany

This day was brought into being in 1968 by the Kassel Lebensabend Movement (LAB). Since then, campaigns and publications have been used on the first Wednesday in April to draw attention to the role of the elderly in society.

In Bremen, the International Day of the Older Generation has been celebrated on October 1st by around 35 organizations (DGB unions, parties, social associations, nature conservation associations, churches, etc.) at the Hanseatenhof since 2010 . The Ver.di senior citizens coordinate the process . There is a stage where music, skits and speeches are offered. The public can find out about the concerns of the older generation in tents and at the information stands.

International significance

The older generation international day ( Engl. International Day of Older Persons ) is a decision of the United Nations committed 19 December 1990 since 1991 on each October 1st.
