Day against the stroke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Day Against Stroke was launched in Germany in 1999 by the German Stroke Foundation. Information events and campaigns on the subject of strokes take place nationwide on and around May 10 of each year . The Stroke Aid network, consisting of 460 self-help groups, 190 regional representatives (mostly chief or senior physicians at acute or rehabilitation clinics) and 300 stroke units (special stroke units ), is involved.

In 2019, the nationwide Day Against Stroke had the motto "I feel something that you cannot see ... - Invisible consequences of the stroke."

Every year around 270,000 people in Germany suffer a stroke. It is the third leading cause of death and the most common cause of disability in adulthood. Due to demographic reasons, strokes will continue to increase and the need for care of those affected will increase. However, experts today agree that up to 70 percent of strokes could be avoided through appropriate preventive measures: a balanced diet, sufficient exercise, refraining from smoking and controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or atrial fibrillation. And the often severe consequences of a stroke could also be prevented or mitigated with timely, qualified treatment and a well-organized supply chain. The German Stroke Foundation, stroke experts and those affected and their families are campaigning for this nationwide.
