Biblical use
In his translation of the Bible , Luther uses Tagewähler to translate the Hebrew term מעונן (participle around verb ענן), which means something like doing fortune-telling (cf. e.g. Dtn 18.10.14 LUT ). In the current revision of the Luther Bible, the term is simply reproduced with fortune-telling. It is unclear what form of fortune-telling is behind the term. It is believed that it could have come about from the shapes of the clouds (a Hebrew word for cloud is also ענן) or from air noises. It is also possible to use the Hebrew word for eye (עין) as a starting point.
