Tasso Takuya (2010)

Takuya Tasso ( Japanese 達 増 拓 也 , Tasso Takuya ; born June 10, 1964 in Morioka , Iwate Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and has been governor of Iwate Prefecture since 2007 in his first term. Previously, he had been a member of the Shūgiin , the lower house of the Japanese parliament, for over ten years, most recently for the Democratic Party (DPJ) .

Life

Tasso, a graduate of Tokyo University Law Faculty , became an official in the Department of State in 1988 . In 1991 he completed a graduate degree at Johns Hopkins University . In the 1996 Shūgiin election , he was elected to parliament for the first time as a candidate for the New Progress Party in the constituency of Iwate 1 , which also includes his hometown of Morioka . During the party reshuffle in the 1990s, he belonged as one of the so-called Ozawa children , supporters of party chairman Ichirō Ozawa - also from Iwate -, the Ozawa Liberal Party and finally the Democratic Party. Tasso was able to defend his constituency in 2000, 2003 and 2005. In the Shūgiin he was a member of the budget and foreign affairs committee.

In 2007, Iwate's governor, Hiroya Masuda , who has been in office since 1995 , announced that he would not run for a fourth term. Tasso resigned his parliamentary seat to apply for the successor. The gubernatorial election took place as well as the parliamentary election in Iwate in the unified regional elections on April 8, 2007 . Tasso's candidacy as a formally independent candidate was supported by the DPJ; his main rival Jun'ichi Yanagimura had the support of the then ruling Liberal Democratic Party . Tasso was able to clearly distance Yanagimura, the wrestler "The Great Sasuke" and two other candidates. At the same time, the DPJ in Iwate became the strongest party in a prefectural parliament for the first time. Tasso took office on April 30, 2007.

During his tenure, he tried to consolidate the Iwates budget through cuts in the salaries of prefectural employees and infrastructure projects.

In the elections in 2011 against three candidates with a two-thirds majority and in 2015 due to the lack of an opponent without a vote, Tasso was confirmed for two further terms.
