Talk cartoon

Talkartoons is the name of 42 short cartoons with music and songs from Fleischer Studios , which were shown by Paramount Studios from 1929 to 1932.

background

Fleischer Studios had previously shown animated music cartoons, including in their song Car-Tunes , in which bouncing balls over the text should make it easier for the audience to sing along ( Bouncing Ball ), and then in their Screen Songs (some of the earliest sound films) . The talk cartoons made a number of cartoon characters popular, especially Betty Boop , first in 1930 in Dizzy Dishes , a cartoon set in a restaurant and in which Betty Boop herself still wears dog trains, animated by Grim Natwick (1890-1990) and Teddy Sears. In 1932 the whole series was named after her. Another character was her somewhat inexperienced dog friend Bimbo(originated from the character Fiz in the Out of the Inkwell series by Fleischer Studios) - first in Hot Dog from 1930 (still without Betty Boop, designed by Lou Fleischer ) - and Koko the Clown (also from her old Out of the Inkwell series ). The Pudgy doll arrived in Little Pal in 1934 .

Betty Boop was modeled after the singer Helen Kane and her voice was often from Mae Questel . In one of the Betty Boop films she is coupled with Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher, 1932) (as a cartoon character of a ghost walrus and real in the opening credits). In Boop-Oop-A-Doop (1932) she sings her theme song Sweet Betty as a tightrope walker in the circus with the refrain from the title of the talk cartoon. Sexual allusions can be found in the cartoons, for example in the cartoon just mentioned (Betty Boop after unsuccessful re-enactments by the ringmaster He couldn't take my boop-oop-a-doop away ). In Bamboo Island (1932, music by Royal Samoans ) she performs a hula dance and Bimbo's initiation from 1931, Bimbo is subjected to the admission rituals of a secret brotherhood with Betty Boop as the seductress. The cartoons were not yet affected by the Hays Code , which came into force in 1934. Even Popeye (with his girlfriend Olive Oyl) came first in a Betty Boop film (Popeye the Sailor 1933), in which Betty Boop again a hula dance performance has a theme park.

The first talk cartoon was Noah's Lark , released in October 1929, with a Noah portrayed as a grumpy captain. Noah allows the animals to enjoy themselves in Luna Park on Coney Island .
