Tandai ( Japanese 探 題 ) are in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods of Japanese history both the name of two Bakufu headquarters and the title of the officers who were stationed there (the title roughly corresponded to that of a governor general). The first of these quarters was established in Kyōto in 1221 ( Rokuhara Tandai ), the second in 1293 in Kyūshū ( Chinzei Tandai ).
