Rokuhara Tandai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rokuhara Tandai ( Japanese 六 波羅 探 題 ) was the name of the commanding officer of the Kamakura Shogunate in Heian-kyō (now Kyōto ) and its organization, whose relatives ensured security in Kinai (the lands around the capital) and for legal matters in western Japan and negotiated with the imperial court.

Rokuhara referred to an area east of the Kamo River between the then 5th ( gojō-ōji ) and 7th main street ( shichijō-ōji ) Heian-kyōs or today's Matsubara Street and Shichijō Street in Higashiyama-ku , Kyoto.

The Rokuhara Tandai was founded after the Jōkyū War in 1221. The two leaders were called Kitakata ( 北方 ) and Minamikata ( 南方 ). The Kitakata was superior to the Minamikata. As with Shikken and Rensho , the Hōjō clan had a monopoly on both posts. The office was dissolved after the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate in 1333 .
