A tank bag is a piece of luggage that is mounted on the fuel tank of motorcycles and is used to stow smaller items such as rainwear, wallets, cameras, cell phones and vehicle documents. There are several types of attachment: A tank bag system consists of a mounting plate, which is permanently attached to the tank, and the actual backpack, which can be removed quickly with a few simple steps. One-piece models, on the other hand, are attached directly to the motorcycle with straps. Tank bags can also be attached to steel tanks with strong permanent magnets .

A transparent folder can usually be attached to the tank bag or it is integrated into the tank bag. It is used to accommodate maps or notes (so-called road books ).

Some tank bag models have a considerable capacity and then impress as a small tower on the tank. A tank bag that is poorly adapted or too large can significantly impair driving safety due to the changed center of gravity, the restricted view of the vehicle instruments or the disabled steering angle.

Some tank bag models can be adjusted from a small volume to a large volume by means of a zipper. This is very practical when traveling, for example, to adapt the tank bag to changing needs. Unlike the rest of the tank bag, this enlargement is not stiffened at the side and leads to instabilities, especially if it is not completely filled. Since 2009, the Swiss manufacturer Enduristan has also been offering tank bags with infinitely adjustable volumes, with these tank bags being stiffened in the entire adjustment range.

When loading the motorcycle, it should be ensured that the heaviest items to be carried with you go into the bottom of the tank bag.
