The Tanzhe Temple ( Chinese  潭柘寺 , Pinyin Tánzhè sì ) in Beijing's Mentougou district is a Buddhist temple from the time of the Western Jin Dynasty . It is the oldest temple in Beijing. The temple has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-195) since 2001 . There is the saying "First was the Tanzhe Temple, then the city of Beijing" (先 有 潭柘寺 , 后 有 北京城).
