Taratha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taratha was a goddess worshiped in Syria and Edessa .

A code from the school of Bar Daisan ( Bardesanes ) from the early 3rd century reports that the men castrated themselves in honor of Taratha , which brings them close to Atargatis . The custom is said to have been ended by the first Christian king of Edessa, Abgar VIII., Who had the ritual castration punished by cutting off a hand.

According to Strabo (XVI, 4,27) Taratha is identical with Derketo .
