The targe is a medium-sized shield from the late Middle Ages and early modern times . It is characterized by its rectangular shape and a central fist grip. The shield surface is often wavy and elaborately designed. It was particularly widespread in Italy , where it was usually used together with the side sword or the rapier . In the fencing art there of the 16th and 17th centuries. it stands between the smaller Buckler and the larger, worn on the forearm Rotella .

The term Targe is also used for some other shield shapes, such as the round armored shields from Scotland.
