A pocket calendar is a calendar in the form of a booklet or card, in a format that fits in the pocket or handbag and can easily be carried by the owner.

Book form

For the days, weeks and months, usually from January 1st to December 31st, there is a narrow or wide column. Accordingly, space for two days, a week or a month can be given on two pages. It is also common practice to leave free space for the owner's notes.

There are pocket calendars for different occupational groups, e.g. B. for teachers or shift workers. Calendars for teachers can be divided into school semesters and extend from August to July. They usually also contain forms for timetables. Even in general pocket calendars, an hourly division (one hour with an indication of the time per line) is not unusual. In addition to the calendars for specific occupations, there are political pocket calendars in which the relevant address directories, the anniversaries that are special from the specific point of view and the corresponding short articles can be found.

Many pocket calendars have pages, sometimes removable, on which important addresses and phone numbers can be listed alphabetically.

Card shape

The pocket diaries in card form are mainly available in two formats:

Pocket calendars contain a paper core that is usually printed using the offset printing process. In order to achieve the desired high volume, either a picture printing board (about 300 g / m² paper weight) can be used, which is coated with (thin) foil in a later operation, or a thinner paper is printed and then laminated with a stronger plastic film brought to the desired volume.

One can differentiate between ...

  1. Sealed cards made of paper with a thicker laminate film, which can be recognized by the protruding transparent edge.
  2. Foil-laminated (matt or glossy) cards made of cardboard, which are coated with foil up to the edge of the paper but not beyond.
  3. Credit card quality cards made up of several PVC layers laminated on top of each other or rigid PVC cards with a material thickness of 0.5 to 0.8 mm.

The calendar is usually on the front as a year-round calendar, often with vacation dates and marked public holidays of the individual federal states . The client puts his advertising on the back.

Pocket calendars in card form are demonstrably used for advertising purposes from 1878 at the latest (Clarks ONT Spool Cotton - Ladys Pocket Calendar USA - GEORGE A CLARK SOLE AGENT).

In addition to the usual version with an annual calendar in portrait or landscape format, there are also pocket calendars with half-year calendars, school holiday calendars (for 1 school year each), pollen calendars, event calendars, etc.

Collectibles

The different shapes, formats and the graphic design of the backs, the motifs of which are very diverse, attract many people to collect the pocket calendar. Curious pocket calendars appear, for example, as CDs, mirrors, car wash cards, glasses cleaning cloths, entrance tickets, ice scrapers, hotel IDs, perpetual calendars, credit card cases, bookmarks, rulers, price tags, cheat sheets, handkerchiefs, phone cards, thermometers, business cards or even decorative handkerchiefs.
