The Tauragnas in the district of Utena in north-eastern Lithuania is the deepest and highest lake in the country, situated above sea level (165 m). With a length of 9.5 km and an average width of 540 m, it reaches a maximum depth of 62.5 m. On average, 95.6 million m³ of water fill the glacial channel with a bank length of 25.6 km. The Tauragnas is located in the north-west of the Aukštaitija National Park, which was founded in 1974, and its name and the two neighboring settlements of Tauragnai (2001, 602 inhabitants) and Taurapilis (2001, 27 inhabitants) are legendary.
Legend
The Duke Rigimundas is said to have camped by the lake with his soldiers and played the zither when two aurochs ( Lithuanian Tauras ) came out of the forest to listen to the game. Rigimundas asked them about a suitable place to build a home and the aurochs showed him a hill on the lake shore. There the prince built his castle, which he called Taurapilis.
Other places in Lithuania ( Tauragė , Taurai, Taurakiemis, Tauralaukis ) owe their names to the wild cattle, which died out in 1627 .
