The Teatro Ópera on Avenida Corrientes

The Teatro Ópera is located in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires , on Avenida Corrientes 860.

description

The history of the Teatro Ópera goes back to 1871. In that year the entrepreneur Antonio Petalardo sensed that the street in Buenos Aires, which was narrow at the time and far from the center, would be enlivened by the construction of theaters. This moment was almost the birth of the Ópera, a theater that was to be devoted to everything “lyrical” in principle and had amazing installations for the time, including its own power station. This made it the first theater in Latin America with electric lighting.

However, this first building was demolished in 1935 for the upcoming expansion of Avenida Corrientes. The property was then acquired by Clemente Lococo and the Belgian architect Alberto Bourdon designed the new building, which was characterized by a simple but original facade and space for 2,500 people. The stage was suitable for various events and also had a large film screen. In the interior, the ceiling simulates a starry sky. In the “Petit Ópera” in the basement, “sneak previews” of films are shown, and it is also used for other cultural events.

Over the years, Ava Gardner , Édith Piaf , the Folies Bergère , the Paris Lido , Ella Fitzgerald and other artists have performed here.
