Teatro Munizione

The Teatro Munizione ( "Theater of Munitions" ) was a municipal theater in the Sicilian city of Messina .

history

Since 1827 the Senate of Messina asked the Bourbon Crown (da molti anni deplorandone il difetto, […] un teatro condegno alle fiorenti condizioni sue) , “for many years weeping for the shortcomings, […] a theater that meets the demands would be appropriate ". But for financial reasons this did not seem to have been possible. At first they thought of adapting the old Teatro della Munizione. (It was so named because the theater was once set up in a large hall that once housed weapons and ammunition, i.e. it was an armory). But very soon they said goodbye to this idea and began demolishing this building in order to build a new theater on the same site, which was to bear the same name.

building

Although Andrea Arena and Antonio Tardì , the most famous architects of Messina of the time, were commissioned with this plan, a public competition was held for this theater, to which all the architects of the then “ Regno delle due Sicilie ” were invited to bring a draft. The Neapolitan Pietro Valente won the competition with the design of a classical building.
