The Teatro Nacional Sucre in Quito is the largest theater in Ecuador . It was built from 1879 to 1887 by Ludgardo Fernández Salvador in the Italian neoclassical style. The construction was partly financed by the Quito bourgeoisie through the sale of shares.

In the 1940s and 1950s, several performances of the Kammerspiele founded by Karl Löwenberg took place in the Teatro Nacional Sucre , for example a performance in 1947 with the participation of Ecuadorian actors of the Ibsen play Nora or Ein Puppenheim . The actress Vera Kohn , who came from the Kammerspiele , had many appearances here until 1957 .

Today the Teatro Sucre is operated by the Fundación Teatro Nacional Sucre .

The theater is used for operas , concerts, plays, dance and similar performances. It has an audience capacity of over 800.
