The Teatro Presidente of El Salvador is located in the capital, San Salvador , and is the largest theater in the country in terms of seating capacity. It is in close proximity to the Museo de Arte de El Salvador .

history

The theater opened on December 1, 1971 during the reign of President Fidel Sánchez Hernández . It was originally planned to serve as a stage for government and parliamentary events, television broadcasts. It was also used as a cinema in the later 1970s and 1980s. The property was under the administration of the Ministry of Education until 1990. Today the theater is operated by the Dirección Nacional de Artes and used for various cultural events such as ballet, opera, concerts, lectures and presentations.

The theater has a capacity of 1,429 seats and an orchestra pit in front of the stage. The murals with motifs from the Maya culture were painted by the artists Roberto Huezo and Roberto Galiciadie. The Teatro Presidente is currently home to the El Salvador Symphony Orchestra .
