Technical assistance on traffic routes (THV) is available at times of high traffic (start / end of vacation, long weekends, public holidays) in some federal states such as B. Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria or Saxony by local associations of the technical relief organization (THW) on the motorways. The technical assistance will be based on requests by highway maintenance or highway police stations . The helpers are specially trained for the tasks on busy roads.

For the THV service, specially equipped emergency vehicles are used for this task. In addition to hydraulic rescue equipment ( spreader / scissors), the vehicles are equipped with a wide range of accessories for traffic safety ( pylons , speed cameras, signs, traffic control systems on vehicles) as well as with medical bags , oil binding agents , tools, brooms and shovels, etc. In addition, notebooks with the latest dangerous goods software and rescue guidelines from the car manufacturers are used.

Operational tasks

The THW has to fulfill the following 4 basic tasks:

Measures to restore the flow of traffic, eliminate traffic disruptions

  • Removal of traffic obstacles and vehicle recovery
  • Repair of minor breakdowns in vehicles
  • Clearing the traffic area of ​​accident debris and sweeping the roadway
  • Participation in oil damage control measures
  • Freeing or towing of broken-down vehicles, especially trucks, in the event of winter weather

  • Traffic jam warning and traffic jam protection
  • Road closures and traffic control on instructions from the police
  • Illumination of accident or danger areas
  • General security and security services on behalf of the responsible authorities
  • Piloting of clearance and gritting services
  • Support of the police and the public prosecutor's office with educational measures
  • Supply measures for road users during long traffic jams, especially in extreme weather
  • Removal of obstacles away from traffic routes (e.g. storm and snow break or recovery of vehicles that have come off the road)

  • Rescuing injured or trapped people from vehicles

  • Traffic jam protection / traffic jam warning
  • Recovery / removal of cargo
  • Provision of pilot vehicles with blue lights to accompany winter service vehicles of the road construction administration
