Tecuitatl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tecuitatl are green algae and a form of spirulina discovered by the Aztecs . Tecuitatl appeared as a green foam on Lake Texcoco in the Teotihuacán Valley and was quickly valued by the Aztecs as a high quality food. With the invasion of the Spaniards, Tecuitatl was pushed back, as more traditional agriculture was used.

In 1943, the Sosa Texcoco Company founded a sodium carbonate factory on Lake Texcoco , whose tanks were repeatedly clogged with algae. So it came about that from now on the company has also adjusted to the production of spirulina and one of the most modern spirulina farms is located on Texcoco Lake.
