Tegbesu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tegbesu was the sixth king of Dahomey . He succeeded Agadya and ruled from 1732 to 1774.

Tegbesu's rule was characterized by internal intrigues and a failed foreign policy. He killed many conspirators and political opponents, refused to pay tribute to the Yorubas , and lost many battles in the punitive expeditions that followed. Its main symbol was a buffalo wearing a tunic. His other symbols were the blunderbuss, a weapon he gave his warriors - the royal army had access to firearms for the first time - and a door with three noseless heads in memory of his victory over insurgent subjects, the Zou , whose bodies he mutilated.
