Kpengla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kpengla was the seventh king of Dahomey . He succeeded Tegbesu and ruled from 1774 to 1789.

During Kpenglas reign the kingdom grew: he killed Agbamou , the leader of the Popo , and thus expanded his empire to the area of today's Togo . He destroyed the cities of Ekpe and Badagry (now in Nigeria ), which disrupted Dahomey's monopoly in the slave trade . His main symbol was the Akpan bird, a rifle (flint locks became standard in the army during his reign), and an amazon .
