The ponds on the Long Way are a protected, extensive natural monument in the area of the city of Norden in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony in East Frisia . It bears the number ND AUR 00126.

Description of the area

The extensive natural monument, designated on March 16, 1990, is located in the midst of agricultural areas south of Westermarscher Strasse and east of Lange Weg in Westermarsch I , a district from the north. The wetland with its five partially interconnected still waters is of artificial origin and was created by the mining of clay to cover the immediate sea dike . Today alder and willow-covered dams separate the individual water surfaces. The district placed the area under protection because of its importance as a habitat for adapted animal and plant species in the landscape near the dike, because of its function as an invigorating landscape element and as a testimony to the history of the landscape. An inventory of existing plant and animal species is planned.

The district sees the use of leisure activities such as ice skating and fishing, the entry of nutrients from the adjacent agricultural areas and its isolation from other undisturbed habitats as particular dangers for the water body.

In order to counteract these dangers, the adjacent agricultural areas, the edge strips on the wetland, should be used extensively as buffer strips.
