Ponds on the Ziegeleistraße

The ponds on Ziegeleistraße are a protected, extensive natural monument in the area of the city of Norden in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony in East Frisia . It bears the number ND AUR 00126.

Description of the area

The extensive natural monument, designated on March 16, 1990, is located in the midst of agricultural areas north of Ziegeleistraße in Westermarsch I , a district from the north. The wetland with its two still waters is of artificial origin. It was created through the dismantling of clay to cover the sea dike and was then prepared according to nature conservation considerations . Today the two ponds with inserted islands as well as bays and headlands shape the area. Around the water bodies there are fallow areas with dry stone walls and brushwood piles. The district placed the area under protection because of its importance as a habitat for adapted animal and plant species in the landscape close to the dike, because of its function as a resting and feeding biotope for water birds and waders as well as part of a biotope network system in the area close to the dike.

The district sees the spread of alien plants, the silting up of the shallow water zones and the entry of nutrients from the adjacent agricultural areas as particular dangers for the water body.

The district wants to counteract this with the maintenance pruning of the fallow land and the planting of pollarded willows in the outer edge area of the area.
