Particle jet

A particle jet is a measurable phenomenon in experiments in high-energy physics , which allows conclusions to be drawn about particle collisions. These jets are made up of many particles that fly in similar directions in the detector.

In collision processes in particle accelerators, particle jets are created if the energies are sufficiently high. This is due to a peculiarity of the strong interaction , the confinement . If two quarks are torn apart during a collision , the interaction energy increases with the distance until the energy is finally large enough to generate a new quark-antiquark pair. This process is repeated several times and is called hadronization , as a large number of hadrons , i.e. matter , is created. The direction of flight of all these particles is determined by the direction of the first, so that they all fly in a beam of rays (jet). Due to its shape, the original collision partners can be inferred in detectors .

The discovery of 3-jet events at DESY at the end of the 1970s was an indication of gluons .
