Teishō

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Teishō is the daily lecture of the Zen teacher in the dojō or at the sesshin .

In the Teishōs the teacher deals with the contents of Zen. The Teishō differs from a mere lecture by showing the Dharma - the undisguised reality as it is. The external reference point of the Teishos are mostly texts from the traditions. Also koans are discussed. The teacher cannot and will not impart the koan or the dharma to the students as an inner insight. It emphasizes certain aspects, explains historical backgrounds or linguistic features. An advanced student will hear more of the content of a Teisho and probably also something different than an inexperienced listener.

The lecture will be given freely and spontaneously. He's often powerful or funny, dramatic and cheering. It is intended to deepen the students' knowledge both intellectually and spiritually.
