Tenganan

Tenganan is a mountain village on the island of Bali with inhabitants of the Bali Aga people , about three kilometers from Candi Dasa. It is one of the few villages in Bali where pre-Hindu culture has remained alive.

The Bali Aga describe themselves as descendants of the native people of Bali. They managed to preserve their cultural and religious traditions for centuries through strict isolation.

The tradition ( adat ) determines u. a. that only those who live in the village who choose their spouse from among the villagers are allowed to stay and live . Anyone looking for a woman or a man outside of the village community has to build their life outside the borders and then only comes to the village to visit.

The wealthy Tenganans do not work physically themselves, but have Balinese people from the surrounding villages do the work on the rice fields for part of the harvest.

This leaves the Bali Aga time and leisure to maintain traditions and devote themselves to art and handicrafts . Are known worldwide and highly collectible estimated that in the complicated process of double ikat Geringsing fabrics made from Tenganan.

This hand- weaving process came to Indonesia before our era with the Dong-Son culture , and is now only practiced in the Bali-Aga village of Tenganan. The substance is said to have magical powers. The mystical character of the holy shawls is evident from the name. Low means "warding off illness".
