Teresa Hamel

Teresa Hamel (born April 20, 1918 in Viña del Mar ; † March 18, 2005 there ) was a Chilean writer.

In 1984 she received the Premio Internacional Julio Cortázar Primer for her story “La sorpresa” (The Surprise) . In 1985 she won the Paula magazine writing competition with the story La Rucia Guzmán , and in 1967 the 2º premio del concurso Gabriela Mistral of the city of Santiago for her story La noche del rebelde (The Night of the Rebel).

After Teresa Hamel's death, her family donated the over two thousand volumes to the author of the Biblioteca Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna in Viña del Mar.

In 2008, the Chilean writers' association Sociedad de Escritores de Chile and Hamle's family created the Concurso Nacional de Cuentos Teresa Hamel, in memory of the writer and her work. A museum hall was opened in memory of Hamel. At the opening ceremony, several well-known authors gave speeches in honor of Hamel's literary work.
