Tetricus of Langres

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tetricus of Langres (d. 572/73) was bishop of Langres from 539/40 until his death .

Tetricus came from a noble Gallo-Roman senatorial family, his father was Gregor von Langres . Tetricus was one of his three sons and the only one known by name. He succeeded his father in 539/40 and was said to have held this office for 33 years (cf. Venantius Fortunatus Carm. 4,3). Like his father, he mainly resided in Dijon . Tetricus took part in the councils of Orléans (549) and Paris (552).

Gregory of Tours , a later relative, has the Merovingian king Chilperich I Tetricus appear in a dream together with Agroecula of Chalon and Nicetius of Lyon in his historical work (Gregory of Tours, Historien VIII 5).
