Text comprehension research

The text comprehension research is a term used in literature and linguistics and is engaged in the process of text comprehension.

Assumptions

The basic assumption of text comprehension research is that when processing stories given in writing, different, at least three cognitive representations are built up:

  • Representation of text surface features. This level affects individual formulations.
  • Representation of the text base - the semantic content in the form of the propositional structure of the story. At this level only explicit meanings and explicit links between sentences are looked at. For example, those who say "A man hurt himself. The man was in great pain." reads, builds a link between the two sentences via the actually occurring word "man". The reader assumes that the man is the same in both sentences.
  • non-text based situation model . This level goes beyond the explicit aspects. For example, if you read the sentence "A man injured himself. An ambulance came", there is no explicit connection between the two sentences in this pair of sentences. The reader concludes, however, that the ambulance is coming because of the injury and thus establishes a connection between the two sentences. This is an implicit relationship.
