The Academy at 42 Pearse Street in Dublin , Ireland , was built in 1824. There are currently offices in the building. It is a listed building (number: 6504).
history
Built in 1824, the building on Pearse Street was the headquarters of the Dublin Oil and Gas Company . After the company went bankrupt in 1834, the building initially stood empty for a while.
In the early 1840s, the building was finally acquired by the Ancient Concert Society and reopened as a venue. Initially it offered space for around 600 to 800 guests. The Ancient Contert Society's first performance on the premises was on April 20, 1843. Initially music and theater but also sporting events took place there. Since 1920, however, the premises have also been used for film screenings. In 1956 the building was reopened as a cinema under the name The Embassy Cinema and was named The Academy Cinema in March 1965 .
The Academy had to close for good in the 1980s. After a few years of vacancy, the building was restored and rebuilt and has been used as an office building ever since.
Trivia
Especially under the auspices of the Ancient Concert Society, performances by well-known artists took place in the premises. The Irish tenor John McCormack and the Irish writer James Joyce , who at the time also had musical ambitions, sang there . The Irish Literary Theater also made its early appearances there.
