The American Scholar is a quarterly magazine on politics , literature , science , history, and culture published by the Phi Beta Kappa Society since 1932. The title of the magazine refers to Ralph Waldo Emerson's famous speech The American Scholar , which he delivered to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard College in1837. It is based on Emerson's ideals of independent thinking, self-knowledge and devotion to what is happening in the world such as books, history and science.
